Chinese Hospital is extremely proud to be marking its 120th anniversary, a signicant
milestone that very few organizations achieve. It is particularly gratifying to be celebrating this
anniversary as Chinese Hospital recently received a 5-Star rating from the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS) based on quality of care, safety and patient experience. I credit
this success to the dedicated medical providers and sta for their devotion to the hospital and
the community it serves.
Reecting on the long-standing history of Chinese Hospital, I would like to acknowledge our
original founders for their visionary leadership in creating this culturally sensitive healthcare
organization to serve the Chinese community when they were denied healthcare elsewhere. In
addition, I wish to recognize the generations of board members, medical sta and community
leaders who fought tirelessly for the survival of Chinese Hospital during the past 120 years.
anks to the contribution and dedication from the resilient leaders and support from the
community, Chinese Hospital has transformed from a small dispensary in 1899 to a modern
state-of-the-art hospital today.
Together with its partners, Chinese Hospital is focused on improving healthcare access, quality
of care, patient experience, long-term nancial viability and strengthening of our hospital
culture and operational stability.
Most importantly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you, supporters
of Chinese Hospital, for your continued trust in our healthcare system. Chinese Hospital is
committed in making our community healthy.

wellness.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation

allows us to donate back to worthy causes,” said
Mr. Arthur Chan. “I watched the new Chinese
Hospital grow from a concept to a magnicent
hospital, and I can think of no better investment
than supporting the much-needed medical
services for the community.
e Phoenix Wall campaign was launched
in 2016 and raised over $3.4 million. e

Dear Friends,
Chinese Hospitals landmark completion of the 2016 Patient Tower has won
extraordinary, positive attention throughout San Francisco and beyond, and
a 5-Star Rating for overall performance from the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS). e 5-Star Rating from CMS is unique among
all acute care hospitals in San Francisco, in which donors like you can share
sincere and well-deserved pride of accomplishment.
e sparkling new building has inspired a diligent re-design with renovation
plans for the adjacent but dated 1979 hospital building, so that it better
complements the 5-Star standards set by the new Patient Tower. e plans
will allow Chinese Hospital to provide new, more ecient and expanded
healthcare services by leveraging the physical envelope of the existing
structure, thus providing a cost-eective approach consistent with Chinese
Hospitals reputation for ecient use of donors’ investments.
e same capable team that successfully managed the Patient Tower Project
has been working with design and construction teams to fulll the vision set
by our Hospital leadership, the Board of Trustees, current and prospective
campaign donors, patients, their families, and the community-at-large.
Upgrading the seismically-sound interior layout and facilities of the 1979
building is a cost-eective, wise investment that will pay o with continued
high levels of patient care and satisfaction. Every square foot of the 5-story
building, the rooop and one basement oor, will be touched and renewed
as a result of this project.
Spectacular naming opportunities for donors, and those they seek to honor,
are available throughout the 1979 Building with a select few remaining in
the new Patient Tower. Chinese Hospital now turns to traditional and new
supporters to raise the $23 million balance of the $30 million required to
complete these vital renovations in time for our 125th Anniversary in 2024.
Chinese Hospital appreciates that it is the continued generous support of
donors like you that makes our 5-Star healthcare possible for patients and
their families. On their behalf, thank you!

120
th
anniversary celebration of Chinese Hospital.
For 120 years, Chinese Hospital has provided quality, affordable, and culturally sensitive health care to the
diverse communities of San Francisco. Chinese Hospital’s origins grew out of the need for increased access to
culturally competent health care for our Chinese community, particularly our lower-income and senior
populations. Since its founding, Chinese Hospital has worked tirelessly to grow their services in response to
the unique and dynamic needs of our City’s residents. From opening clinics in different neighborhoods
including the Excelsior and Sunset, to building a state-of-the-art patient tower, Chinese Hospital has made it
their mission to grow their facilities in order to provide the best possible experience for patients, visitors, and
employees. With planned renovations to their patient services building, lobby, laboratory, and kitchen
facilities, Chinese Hospital will continue their legacy of providing essential health care in a comfortable and
modernized setting.
With a continued focus on prevention, wellness, access, and integrated services, Chinese Hospital remains a
vital provider of health care in San Francisco. From optometry and radiology to emergency care, health
programs, and pharmacological care, Chinese Hospital is a critical part of ensuring our community has access
to the care they need so they can lead healthy lives.
Thank you to everyone who made this incredible celebratory event possible, and to all those in attendance

Chinese Hospital Lifetime Achievement Award
e Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr.
Two-term Mayor of San Francisco, legendary Speaker of the California State Assembly, and widely
regarded as the most inuential African-American politician of the late twentieth century, Willie L.
Brown, Jr., has been at the center of California politics, government, and civic life for an astonishing
four decades. His career spans the American Presidency from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush,
and hes worked with every California Governor from Pat Brown to Arnold Schwarzenegger. From
civil rights to education reform, tax policy, economic development, health care, international trade,
domestic partnerships, and armative action, hes le his imprimatur on every aspect of politics and
public policy in the Golden State. As Mayor of Californias most cosmopolitan city, he refurbished
and rebuilt the nations busiest transit system, pioneered the use of bond measures to build aordable
housing, created a model juvenile justice system, and paved the way for a second campus of the
University of California, San Francisco, to serve as the anchor of a new development that will position
the City as a center for the burgeoning eld of biotechnology. Today, he heads the Willie L. Brown,
Jr., Institute on Politics and Public Service, where this acknowledged master of the-art-of-politics
shares his knowledge and skills with a new generation of California leaders.
e San Francisco Chronicle called Willie L. Brown Jr. “one of San Franciscos most notable mayors
who had “celebrity beyond the city’s boundaries.” At Chinese Hospital, we refer him as one of the most
remarkable leaders in the Chinese community. Willie L. Brown, Jr. is not only a longtime supporter
of Chinese Hospital, but also a top advocate for the hospital. He played a key role in developing the
golf tournament alongside Rose Pak and Ed Lee back in the 1990s. In 2018, he became the co-chair
of our golf tournament committee. Additionally, he is our beloved auctioneer at the golf tournament.
We would like to thank Willie L. Brown, Jr. for being a key part of our community’s history and
legacy. As he has played an inuential part of Chinese Hospital’s evolution and success for more than
25 years, we are proud to present the Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. with the Lifetime Achievement
Award.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING CHINESE HOSPITAL!
Together, Keith and Carmelita embarked upon an impactful journey of philanthropy, with an emphasis
on healthcare. Chinese Hospital is one of the many healthcare institutions that they support.
My wife and I worked very hard for survival, we are now both seniors, and we are fortunate to be able
to support an institution that helps the Chinese Community as well as those in the community who
are less fortunate and unable to aord quality healthcare,” said Keith.
Keith took an interest in helping Chinese Hospital when he rst read an article about the new Patient
Tower construction project. He also learned more about Chinese Hospital through his physician
friends. Keith and Carmelita valued and supported Chinese Hospital at every level, and proudly
funded the Chinese Hospital new Patient Tower. In recognition of their contributions and support to
the hospital, their names are listed in the stress testing room, stress exam room, radiology room, nurse
station, the hospital lobby and many more locations. For their compassion and lifelong commitment,
Chinese Hospital proudly presents Keith and Carmelita with the “Donor of the Year” Award.

Columbus Day – at San Francisco’s world-class Olympic
Club. Over $800,000 was raised.
This fundraiser benefits the critically-needed 1979 building
renovation, along with expansion of the same-day surgery
center, laboratory, multispecialty clinic, and an infusion center
for chemotherapy and blood transfusions. The renovation,
expansion and improvements will be consistent with Chinese
Hospital’s exceptional 5-Star Rating from the Centers for
Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) for outstanding
patient care.
The late Mayor Edwin Lee and Rose Pak founded the charity
golf tournament 25 years ago to raise funds for the hospital,
providing quality care for the underserved community. Each
year, over 300 golfers play at the lavish Lake and Ocean
courses. After golf, guests attend a cocktail reception led
by our golf co-chair, the magnanimous and energetic
Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. A glimpse of a few of this year’s
live auction items included:
• China Southern Business class plane tickets
• Chef George Chen’s China Live Dumpling Group Workshop
• Dinner with Mayor Brown at owner Kinson Wong’s
Harborview Restaurant & Bar
• Dinner party at the elegant French Grand Le Colonial
• Lake Tahoe Getaway
• Kings VIP Transportation Inc. luxury bus ride to dine with
a group of your closest friends at the upscale Valette’s
with a private wine tasting in Healdsburg
• An ultimate gaming experience at Graton Resort & Casino
And many more other exciting items from our silent auction.
We are grateful to our sponsors, donors, fundraising committee
and many volunteers for their generous contributions and all
their support in making this another successful year. Every
effort helps us get closer to our goals. We hope to see you
again in 2020!
