ELA AND SHIFT TO THE
SCIENCE OF READING
4

phonics instruction, application, and learning High
Frequency Words.

Five Pillars of Reading = Essential components of reading
instruction identified by the National Reading Panel Report*
In Kindergarten this year we will use…
WRITING AND FUNDATIONS
Regular, explicit handwriting instruction in the classroom is
CRUCIAL
A CONSISTENT approach throughout a school is vital so that
children have the best opportunity to master the complex task of
handwriting. CCPS uses Fundations Letter Formation PreK-3.
Starting points for letter formation, verbal cues, and air writing
has been found to be effective in assisting a child to develop
consistent formation of letters
Fundations writing lines (sky, plane, grass, worm) are consistent
preK-3
In Fundations, dictation of sounds and words are an opportunity
to model, practice, and provide feedback on correct letter
formation.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
There are parent letters which give families information about the
words that students are working on
Many words follow a typical phonics pattern; therefore, the words
can be correctly sounded out. Students should still practice these
to make them automatic. (i.e. can, am)
Some words do not follow a phonetic pattern, therefore we will be
utilizing "heart words" to help students automatically know the
word (some, said)
Decoding and "heart words" will be more effective and efficient
versus rote memorization
