The nursing programs at UB are designed to prepare a graduate nurse for entry-level practice in a variety of
healthcare settings, to provide the foundation for continued education as a life-long learner, and to contribute to
quality patient outcomes. Currently, international students are not eligible to apply to UBSN programs.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN) PROGRAM
Admission to the Nursing Program through the University of Bridgeport School of Nursing (UBSN) is highly
competitive. In addition to the general requirements listed below, candidates are also expected to have
completed a rigorous curriculum of general education, math, and science foundation coursework, as listed in the
Program Prerequisites below, to be eligible to apply. Relevant admissions information can be found below for
each applicant student type.
Assessment Technologies Institute Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS VII) examination scores will be
used in the evaluation of candidates for the BSN Program. The national average for the TEAS exam is 70
(minimum required score is 58).

Introduction to Nursing and Clinical Preparation
The nursing curriculum begins in sophomore year with an emphasis on patient safety. In UB’s Nursing Skills and
Simulation Center, students will learn and practice nursing competencies prior to providing direct patient care.
Clinical Experience and Education
Nursing students begin clinical experiences in the second semester of their sophomore year. Clinical sites vary
depending on course objectives and content. Sites include local hospitals, such as Bridgeport Hospital, schools,
medical offices, and more. Clinical hours include laboratory and simulation experiences in all nursing clinical
courses.
Graduation Requirements and Outcome
To graduate from the BSN program, students must complete 55 credits in general education and 65 credits in
nursing, totaling 120 credits. All students will complete the Nursing Capstone. Along with a solid foundation in
nursing, graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-
RN
®
Exam).
Traditional BSN Program Structure
Pre-Nursing Curriculum
Students begin their journey towards a BSN in freshman year. Students enroll in general education courses
including the pre-requisites required in the nursing program and therefore follow a pre-nursing curriculum.
Between October 1, 2024 - February 1, 2025, UB Students interested in pursuing a BSN must apply to the
School of Nursing and submit all necessary documents. Students admitted to the BSN program will begin core
courses in the fall of their sophomore year. New transfer students may be eligible to enter directly into the
Sophomore Year.
Accelerated BSN Program Structure
The University of Bridgeport School of Nursing (UBSN), Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN)
program is designed for those students who hold a bachelor’s degree in another field other than nursing. This
accelerated track incorporates the previous non-nursing bachelor’s level course education and experience and
allows the student to earn a BSN degree in fifteen months.

To graduate from the ABSN program, students must complete 64 credits in general education and 56 credits in
nursing, totaling 120 credits. Along with a solid foundation in nursing, graduates of the program will be eligible to
sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) General Admission Requirements
Traditional BSN Program: Students may apply to the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing program
beginning August 1

and should submit all required documents by February 1

to be considered for
admission into the BSN program.
Accelerated BSN Program: Students may apply to the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program
on a rolling basis. Once the program is filled, your application can be considered for the next incoming class.
Applications are considered completed once all documents as listed are received. Priority deadline for
application is October 1 for the January start and January 20 for the May start.
Applicants must achieve a C+ or better in all Math and Science courses (including but not limited to Anatomy
& Physiology I & II, Chemistry, and Algebra) and a minimum cumulative Quality Point Ratio (QPR) of 3.0 to
apply to the BSN Program.
Math and science coursework must be completed within seven years prior to applying to the BSN Program.
ATI TEAS VII Examination official score report sent from ATI directly with scores taken no earlier than 2

Students may apply to the Associate Degree of Science in Nursing program on a rolling basis. Once the
program is filled, your application can be considered for the next incoming class. Applications are considered
completed once all documents as listed are received.
Applicants must achieve a C+ or better in all Math and Science courses (Anatomy & Physiology I & II,
Microbiology, Chemistry, and Algebra) and a minimum cumulative Quality Point Ratio (QPR) of 2.75 to apply
to the ADN Program.
Math and science coursework must be completed within five years prior to applying to the ADN Program.
ATI TEAS VII Examination official score report sent from ATI directly with scores taken no earlier than 2
years prior to date of application.
Students who have been dismissed from the UBSN BSN or ABSN program are ineligible to apply for the
ADN program.

Essay
The essay helps us become acquainted with you as a person and will demonstrate your ability to organize
and express your thoughts. You must respond to the designated essay prompt on page 15. The prompt is:
Write a short thank you note to a person you have not yet thanked and would like to acknowledge.”
You may attach additional details of circumstances or qualifications not reflected in the application,
especially when a previous semester’s GPA or nursing coursework is not satisfactory. Please explain why
you should be admitted, and what is different now since your previous academic record. The candidate should
include their name, date, and signature on the statement.

What are you looking for from applicants to the School of Nursing?
Admission to the School of Nursing is highly competitive and selective. Our faculty are involved in the process
from the very beginning. We are looking for students who have developed an interest in healthcare as a career
and who have an interest in the type of curriculum we are offering. The review committee, comprised of faculty
from the School of Nursing and the Office of Admissions, will review applications. Interviews are not required but
may be requested on a case-by-case basis.
The review committee considers all aspects of the application. We are looking for motivated individuals who
have taken their academic preparation seriously. An applicant’s motivation for a career as a Nurse is very
important in our selection process.
Due to the competitive nature of the program, most successful candidates will have met more than just minimum
requirements. For further information regarding the application process to the School of Nursing, please visit

How many students are accepted into the Nursing Program?
Traditional BSN Program: Each Fall semester, a total of 50-60 BSN students are accepted into the School
of Nursing. These students are a combination of new freshmen and UB pre-nursing curriculum students,
transfer applicants, and current UB students who are changing their major to Nursing.
Accelerated BSN Program: Each session (January or May), a total of 30 ABSN students are accepted into
the School of Nursing.
ADN Program: Each session (January, May, September), a total of 40 ADN students are accepted into the
School of Nursing.
When should I apply? Is there an application deadline?
Traditional BSN Program: UB BSN applicants are expected to complete their full application for admission
to the BSN Program by February 1
st
. Applications are considered complete once all documents, as listed on
page 5 of this packet, have been submitted. New transfer applicants will work directly with Admissions to
complete this process. University of Bridgeport students in the pre-nursing curriculum and internal change of
major students will work directly with the School of Nursing to complete this process.
Accelerated BSN Program: There are a limited number of seats for the ABSN program. Students are
encouraged to submit their application and materials as early as possible to be considered for the incoming
class. Once the program is filled, your application can be considered for the next incoming class.

application is October 1 for the January start and January 20 for the May start.
ADN Program: There are 40 seats for each cohort for the ADN program. Students are encouraged to submit

How can I assess my eligibility for admission?
Traditional BSN Program: All candidates are eligible to apply to the BSN program, but eligibility for
admission will only be assessed by the UB School of Nursing after February 1

candidates should self-identify their eligibility for entry into the BSN program. Candidates may apply while

Accelerated BSN Program: All candidates are eligible to apply to the ABSN program. Eligibility for
admissions will only be assessed by the UB school of Nursing using the documents contained in this guide.

coursework will allow completion of all prerequisites prior to the start of the ABSN program.
ADN Program: All candidates are eligible to apply to the ADN program. Eligibility for admissions will only

Do you offer a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN) bridge program?
We do not offer an LPN to RN bridge program. However, LPNs are encouraged to apply to either the Bachelor
of Science in Nursing or the Associate Degree in Nursing program as new transfer applicants. LPNs will be
reviewed according to all transfer standards as listed in the Admissions page linked above. Transfer credit may
be awarded for general education coursework that meets basic transfer criteria and will be evaluated on a case-
by-case basis. However, credit will not be awarded for practical nursing coursework or experience at this time.
Is experience in the healthcare field required for admission to the School of Nursing?
While experience is not required, applicants to the School of Nursing may find it beneficial to volunteer within the
healthcare field. Additionally, all Nursing candidates may receive further admissions consideration based on
relevant work and volunteer experience within healthcare.
Are any of the Programs offered entirely online, in the evening, or on weekends?
Courses within the curriculum of the BSN/ABSN program are generally available Monday through Friday
between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM. Labs and clinical may be scheduled during evening hours. Additionally,
students should expect to be enrolled on a full-time basis, meaning enrolled in 12 or more credit hours per
semester. However, for the traditional BSN program, general education and pre-requisite coursework within the
Pre-Nursing Curriculum may be available in alternate formats, such as online, evening, or weekend offerings.
Important Note: to maintain scholarship eligibility, students must enter UB with full-time status, and maintain full-
time status throughout the entirety of their enrollment with the University.
The ADN program is designated as a part-time evening program. Classes will be held in the evenings starting at
6:00PM and clinicals may occur in the evenings or on the weekends.
Please note: If you are a current UB student applying to the ABSN program, no merit/academic based
scholarships can be applied to the ABSN program.
Can I tour campus and visit the Nursing Skills and Simulation Center site before being
accepted?

Yes, it is strongly encouraged that all prospective students tour campus. Candidates are strongly encouraged to
attend an Open House or School of Nursing Information Session. To view upcoming UBSN and Admissions

Is there an entrance examination required for admission to the School of Nursing?
All students applying to the traditional BSN, or the ADN are also required to take the ATI Test of Essential
Academic Skills (ATI TEAS) Examination no earlier than 2 years prior to date of application, and the score must
be submitted by application deadline. Registration for TEAS testing dates at UB can be made at atitesting.com.
All scores are accepted currently, however, the higher the score, the stronger the candidate. The national
average for the TEAS exam is 70 (minimum required score is 58).
The TEAS test is not required for admission to the ABSN program.
Do you accept transfer students from other nursing programs?
Each candidate will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. To determine eligibility, all candidates must complete
an application for admission to the program by the program deadline to receive consideration.
When will I know if I am accepted or not?
Bachelor of Science in Nursing candidates must complete their full application process by February
1st. It is recommended to complete your application to the Nursing program before the priority
deadline. Students who apply by the priority deadline can expect to hear back within 1-2 months.
Review of completed applications will commence after February 1st, and all decision letters will be issued via
mail by April 1st of each year.
How long will it take me to complete the program?
Traditional BSN Program: Students should expect to complete a three-year curriculum in the BSN
program. Though the maximum number of transfer credits accepted into the BSN is 60, the progression of
clinical work is expected to take 6 full-time semesters, or 3 academic years.
Accelerated BSN Program: Students should expect to complete the curriculum in the ABSN program in 15
months. Though the maximum number of transfer credits accepted into the ABSN is 64, the progression of
clinical work is expected to take 4 full semesters. Due to the intensive full-time expectations, it is not
recommended that students work outside of their academic studies.
ADN program: Students are expected to be part-time and take 8 credits/semester. There are 5 semesters
of nursing course work. During the last 2 semesters, students may work with their adviser to determine if
general education coursework towards their RN-BSN may be added to their semester credit load.
Are there scholarships available for UB School of Nursing students?
Traditional BSN Program: All School of Nursing candidates will be considered for academic scholarships
simply by applying to the University.
Accelerated BSN and ADN Program: While there are no academic scholarships for these programs,
financial aid and payment plans are available.

Will I be required to travel off campus to complete clinical hours if I am accepted into the UB
Nursing Program?
UBSN’s affiliation with major area hospitals provides sufficient clinical opportunities for students. Additionally, a
variety of outside clinical facilities are selected to provide students with a wide range of learning experiences in
nursing. Personal transportation is required to travel to the off-campus clinical sites. Students may be expected
to travel up to 75 miles to a clinical site.
What is required of me once I am accepted?
Once a student has been accepted and has committed, they will be required to submit UB Health and
Immunization Records. It is the student’s responsibility to complete and comply with all requirements and any
costs associated with them. All required forms and accompanying information will be sent to students via mail
and email. If accepted into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, additional requirements which include
annual physical, immunizations, background checks and drug testingwill be required. For additional

Is your Nursing Program licensed and accredited?
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is approved by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing
and licensed by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at the
University of Bridgeport is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), 655 K Street
NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791.
The ADN program, the Associate Degree in Nursing program, is pending approval by the State of CT
Board of Examiners of Nursing and licensed by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education.
Application to (ACEN) will be initiated once the program starts.
What is the job placement/salary outlook for Nursing?
The School of Nursing has a strong clinical outreach program. Student educational experiences are rich in both
lecture content and clinical application of knowledge. Job placement and salary outlook have been outstanding

page 1) There is no limit to the number of times students can apply to our program, but there is no guarantee
that a submitted application(s) will result in program acceptance and/or enrollment.
The following document is a Prerequisite Completion Form indicating all the required prerequisites for each
Program. You are required to provide a self-evaluation for the courses you have completed and/or plan to
complete.
Completed Courses
Use the Prerequisite Form to list the College/University you have completed each course along with the
full title of the course, including the course number. Applicants must also list the semester they took the
course, the grade they received, and the number of credits the course was worth. Math/ Science courses
must have a minimum grade of a C+ to be considered complete. All science courses must be a minimum
of 4 credits and include a lab component.
Academic History
Please use the Academic History Form to list all the colleges/universities for which you have attended
and received college credit. You must list your final cumulative GPA, the total number of completed
credits, and whether the transcript you submitted to the Admissions Office is up to date with the most
recent information. This same information MUST be included when completing the Undergraduate
Transfer Application. Failure to list your entire post-secondary history may result in an incomplete
application and ineligibility for review.
Personal & Professional Background
Applicants can provide additional personal and professional details and experiences that may contribute
to their qualifications and motivations to pursue their nursing education. This area is meant to provide
additional supportive information, only if applicable, to the nursing essay.

Full academic history includes ALL academic institutions you have attended since graduation from high school,
and any college credit you received in high school. This same information MUST be included when completing
the Undergraduate Transfer Application for Admission. Failure to list and submit all academic history may result
in an incomplete application and may make your application ineligible for review. A conferred BA/BS degree is
a REQUIREMENT for the Accelerated BSN Program by the application term deadline.

Upload my essay, as outlined by the requirements listed on program specific website, to the online portal
by the application deadline;
Submit my completed Checklist & Prerequisite Form to the online portal by the application term deadline;
Ensure that I have all proper equivalents for the required prerequisites and complete all the math/ science
courses with a C+ or greater by the respective application term deadline. I understand that if I do not have

and a security background check are required prior to or at the start of classes. UBSN will deny a student’s
admission if drug testing is positive. The School of Nursing may revoke admission if required pre-requisite
coursework is not completed or a C+ in the math and science courses is not attained.
