16 | SPRINGSUMMER 2024 RAPPAHANNOCK COMMUNITY COLLEGE
“Do not fear what others may
think or say. Just do it scared!” is
Ruth Campbell’s best advice for
all who are seeking personal and
educational aspirations. Ruth,
Texas native and Virginia resident
since 2021, enrolled in RCCs Adult
Education program. She credits
her educational success to RCC’s
programs and the support of her
family.
Ruth attended elementary school
through the sixth grade and
was then home schooled for the
remainder of her high school
education by her mother, who by
the way, only had a sixth-grade
level of education. She earned
her high school diploma in Texas,
however, oddly enough she never
received it, and it could not be
verified.
In September 2023, Ruth called
the RCC GED program and
inquired about obtaining her GED.
Her initial ambition was to start an
accounting business for truckers,
as her husband is a tenured
commercial driver. Ruth was
delighted to find out GED classes
with RCC were free. She said this
benefit was her initial reason for
joining our program, however,
“the support, encouragement
and having an amazing teacher is
what helped her stick it out.”
“Just dedicate yourself to the GED
program and utilize the amazing
teachers and their knowledge,”
says Ruth. After seven months
of personal study and class
time, which included the GED
Boot Camp, Ruth passed all four
subjects of the GED test in April
2024--just seven months later!
Ruth’s career goal has now
changed! With the help of our
Career Coach, the RCC CHAMPS
(Career Help and Mentoring for
Parenting Students) program and
the RCC WIOA program, Ruth is
registering for our Commercial
Driver’s License (CDL) courses, as
she wants to join her husband as
a CDL driver and travel across the
U.S. with him!

Earn College Credits While in High
School through Dual Enrollment
RCC’s dual enrollment options offer qualifying high school
students a unique opportunity to get a head start on their
college careers. Explore a variety of subjects, from business
to advanced manufacturing, and take college-level classes
taught by qualified instructors before graduating high
school. These courses are designed for both students
planning to transfer to a four-year college and those
seeking immediate employment in a career/technical field.
Save Money on Transferable
College Credits
High school students can take college-level courses
through RCC’s Dual Enrollment program at their home
high school. These courses earn both college and high
school credits, and many students even earn an Associate
degree by the time they graduate high school.
Transferability
Dual enrollment courses provide pathways into college or
careers. Some courses are designed to transfer to four-year
colleges or universities, fulfilling freshman or lower-division
requirements. Other courses fulfill requirements for career
or occupational certificates or applied science degrees
offered at community colleges to fast-track a career.
RCC high school navigators are in your high school, ready
