Less than 40 minutes away from the capital city of San Salvador you can smell the salt air as you
enter El Puerto de La Libertad. This city of fishermen and artisans was founded in 1824. Since then,
this beach-filled municipality has come a long way.
Recently, La Libertad re-branded as Surf City has gained worldwide attention becoming a must-
see destination for tourists, locals, and especially surfers. What is the appeal? The answer: unlimited
waves. El Salvador has consistent surf all year around, with waves suitable for all levels of surfers. If
you are a beginner, you might want to practice from December to February when the swell is
smaller.
Last June, Punta Roca was the main stage for the World Surf Leagues Championship Tour 2024.
Athletes from all over the world came to test their surf skills riding the famous Salvadoran swell.
With surf tournaments and recent global events like the Miss Universe pageant and several high-
profile sports events and concerts, tourism is growing in El Salvador.
Surf City is not just a gem of a surf town on the Pacific coast, for many its just home. The home of
artisans, farmers, artists, and fishermen. The home of fresh fish, tortillas, and coconuts stands on the
side of the road, all an easy drive from San Salvador and Oscar Romero International Airport.

El Salvador has a stunning Pacific coastline. That is a
popular destination among locals and tourists.
Unfortunately these beautiful beaches can also be
dangerous.
Known for strong rip currents and dangerous water
conditions, we urge all citizens to stay safe at the beach
and check the current conditions before going into the
water.
Whether you are an experienced watersport athlete or
just looking to relax by the ocean, stay safe by checking
the beach warning flags or asking a local lifeguard
about conditions.

The American Liaison Network is made up of +50 Community Liaison Volunteers (CLV), with at least two CLVs from
each of the 14 departments of El Salvador. The program is a key component of the Embassy’s efforts to ensure the
safety and security of U.S. citizens living in El Salvador. CLVs are not U.S. government employees, but rather local
community volunteers that help us better understand and provide support to our U.S. citizens living across the
country. Learn more and join us HERE.
American Legion Post One in El Salvador extends an
invitation to veterans from all U.S. services no matter when
and where you served to join their Post and take part in
their activities.
You can contact the Post Commander Alex Montenegro
via cell/WhatsApp at 7190-9475 or email him at
