DECEMBER 20, 2020 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

FROM THE PASTORS PEN
LAST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
SEASON
This weekend we celebrate the Fourth
and nal Sunday in the season of
Advent. We are poised to jump into
Christmas.
Advent is sometimes described as a
season of anticipation in that it looks
forward to and prepares us for
Christmas joy. It is a season, if you
will, that is oriented toward the future.
Anticipation is no doubt something we
are all engaged in these days:
anticipating the distribution of an
eective vaccine and anticipating the
end of this terrible pandemic. Those
two things cannot happen too soon.
Yet we will be required to wait. We
wait in hope; we wait for a time when
we can rejoice together. We wait with
great anticipation.
The way the liturgical calendar is
constructed, there are some years
when we have pretty much a full seven
days after the Fourth Sunday of
Advent before Christmas is
celebrated. In other years, given the
movable feast of Easter around which
the entire liturgical year is put
together, the fourth week in Advent is
truncated, sometimes non-existent.
(When this happens, liturgists go nuts
trying to take a sanctuary decorated
for Advent and transform it into an
environment suitable for Christmas in
the space of an afternoon, no easy
feat!)
My point is that on occasion we get
some days after the Fourth Sunday of
Advent when we are still waiting for
the Christmas season and then there
are other years where we celebrate
that fourth Sunday of the season and
Christmas is immediately upon us.
This year, the nal weekof Advent
consists of three-and-a-half days and
then we are at the Vigil of Christmas.
HODIE CHRISTUS NATUS EST
Thats the Latin title of an ancient
Christmas hymn, Today Christ is
born. The season which we enter on
December 25 celebrates an
astounding message: God becomes
incarnate. He takes on our human
esh in the form of a tiny infant born
in time, into history, our history, at
Bethlehem.
This signicant event has universal
meaning. But it also has personal
meaning. Just as much as Christ was
born into this world thousands of
years ago, due to the action of the
Holy Spirit, made possible by Jesus
death, resurrection and ascension,
that same Christ is born within our
hearts today.
That ancient hymn, Today Christ is
bornhas a double meaning. Christ,
the Savior, is born long ago in that
backwater town of the Roman
Empire. Christ, the Savior, is born in
this day and age as believers accept
the Holy Spirit and live according to
the way of Jesus.
This blessed feast of Christmas we
have much to celebrate. Gods
blessings are manifold, not the least
of which we are gifted with the Spirit
and become disciples and bearers of
Christ to the world around us.
What emotion is more proper to this
season of Christmas than gratitude
and great joy! Alleluia!

THE GREAT GIFT CARD
CHALLENGE WAS A GREAT
SUCCESS!
In the midst of a pandemic our
sharing parishes are facing great
need. The parishioners of Divine
Mercy did not disappoint!
Many thanks to all who were a part
of this year's Christmas Sharing gift
card collection. Over 200 gift cards
were collected for our sharing
parishes, St. Benedict the African
and St. Columbanus , which
exceeded our goal! Because of your
wonderful generosity, the needs of
many will be met this Christmas and
all year long. God bless each of you!
While we are STILL collecting for St.
Benedict the African through
January 6th, you have graciously
donated above and beyond our
expectations for the Great Gift Card
Challenge! You have succeeded in
making the Christmas dreams come
true for the parishioners of our
sharing parishes during this
pandemic year. We are truly
grateful to you.
**You can still participate by visiting
our Christmas Sharing page on our
website under Ministries/Outreach,
where you can sign upfor one or
more gift cards for St. Benedict the
African, which were still collecting
until January 6th. JUST CLICK
HERE, and follow the instructions.

THANK YOU!!
Here is the text of Fr. Steves
Homily from the Sunday of Joy
Christmas Concert & Prayer Service
on December 13th
Thank you for tuning in! I hope you
are enjoying these songs and singers.
I hope that you allow the scripture
and prayer of this video to speak to
you about the true meaning of the
Advent season we are in and the
Christmas season we are about to
celebrate.
In a word, its all about generosity.
God is extremely generous! He sends
us a Savior, Jesus Christ, who saves
us. He does this simply because God
loves and cares for us.
Id like to talk a little bit more about
this, about generosity, but I realize
that Im speaking to two dierent age
groups. I gure a lot families are
watching, in which case weve got
kids watching and adults watching.
So Id like to say something to the
kids rst—and then Id like to talk to
the adults.
Kids rst. At the start of this concert,
we lit the Advent wreath. Three
candles to show that we are now in
the third week of the season.
What does a candle do? Once its lit, it
doesnt hold back, it burns brightly
and provides light! Have you noticed
how many households are putting up
lighted decorations both inside and
outside these days?
Kids know that this pandemic is
causing a lot of pain and anxiety. You
may, yourself, be feeling anxious
about the threat it represents.
Heres what you can do about it. Be a
shining light! In your words and your
actions, be bright and shiny. Say
words that are kind to others, to your
family, and to your friends and
classmates. Make life brighter for
them by what you say and what you
do. Act kindly!
Maybe youre already doing this.
Great! Keep it up! It makes a
dierence—and it mirrors the
generosity of God himself who saves
us for no other reason than that he
loves us!
Parents and other adults who are
watching, that message was also for
you, but I have an additional concern
that Id like to share with you,
referring to the same spirit of
generosity.
Before the pandemic, our parish
usually found itself behind budget in
Sunday giving. This year, due to the
pandemic, we are much further
behind—about 30% further behind,
like almost every other parish in the
Archdiocese.
You hear that (30%) and think, well
not so bad! However, when that gets
translated into real dollars we are
$100,000 in the hole at this point in
the scal year. To put that into
perspective, here are four items from
our budget:
1. excluding special projects backed by
specied donors, and excluding the two
capital campaigns, in any given year
the parish spends close to $300,000 to
repair and replace aging infrastructure
on our two campuses, whether thats
parts for boilers, roong tiles,
plumbing, and so on—all stu you dont
normally see, and, by the way, this
gure is nowhere near what we will end
up spending this year due to the added
COVID safety measures for disinfecting
our churches and our school;
2. the annual subsidy which the parish
provides to Sacred Heart School is
around $180,000 dollars;
3. the property and casualty insurance
we owe each year to the Archdiocese
(which is self-insured) comes to
approximately $150,000;
4. our combined annual utility costs
total about $225,000.
These four examples should be
sucient to explain why we need your
help!
I know the people of this parish are
generous. Generosity only happens
when generous givers know there is a
real need! I come to you hat-in-hand
and ask for your sacricial help—help
that is denitely needed and help that
will be denitely appreciated.
This is Guadate Sunday, the Sunday of
Joy. I know I always feel more joyful
when I give to worthy causes. If you are
so moved, you can either text the word
CHRISTMAS to 847-865-9295, or use
the QR Code at the bottom of your
screen.
Whether you are young or older, may
God bless you in this special season of
giving!
May God look kindly on those who
dwell in darkness and the shadow of
death—and may he guide our feet into
the way of peace, love and light!
Happy Advent! And Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much!

JOIN US FOR ALPHA ONLINE
We invite you to take a break from scrolling and try Alpha, a
series of interactive sessions that explore the basics of the
Christian faith.
What is Alpha? Alpha is an opportunity to explore the big
questions of life. What is my purpose? Why is there suering?
Whos it for? Absolutely anybody!
How does it work? Each session includes a short video
followed by a chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic,
and discuss in a small group. Theres no obligation to say
anything, theres nothing you cant say (seriously) and theres
no such thing as a silly question. Its an opportunity to hear
from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest,
friendly and open environment.
In normal times wed love to invite you to meet together
before each session for a meal. Sadly, we cant do that at the
moment so youll have to grab a cup of coee or your
preferred refreshment and join us online via Zoom! Dont
worry about the technology – all you need is a computer
(ideally with a camera), tablet or a smartphone.
We believe that Alpha is a key component of what the future
holds for us as we build our new reality as Divine Mercy Parish.
Its a wonderful opportunity to get to know others who are
interested in exploring questions of faith.

CHILDRENS MINISTRY (RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/PREP)
The Real St. Nicholas
As we prepare for this blessed season, let us pause for a moment to think about the real St. Nicholas,
who was also called the giver.A few facts:
He was born in the 4th Century, the only child of wealthy, devout parents. His parents died when he
was very young and he was raised by an uncle who was a bishop. From a young age he knew he
wanted to give his wealth away.
He loved surprising people with gifts! In fact, when a poor father in town could not pay for his
daughters wedding, St. Nicholas dropped gold coins through the window. Then, he did this for the
next daughter, too. The third time the poor father stayed up to see who was dropping the gold
through the window. When he caught St. Nicholas, he knelt down and thanked him and asked,
Why would you give this gift and not want us to know it is from you?St. Nicholas replied, It is
good to give and have only God know about it.
He sometimes dropped fruit and treats through the windows (at this time there were no chimneys
in this part of Greece/Turkey where St. Nicholas lived) and they fell in childrens boots. To this day,
children in Europe put out a boot on St. Nicholasfeast day, December 6, in hopes of getting a treat.
He is the patron saint of children, Christmas, those hoping to marry, sailors and travelers.
He has many miracles associated with him, including calming the seas for worried sailors, and a
sweet-smelling mannahas been found in his remains. Many believe in its healing powers.
More than 400 churches in Europe are named after St. Nicholas, more than any other saint other
than our Blessed Mother.
And, because he is so giving and loves children so much, he is the predecessor of our modern day
Santa Claus! Merry Christmas!
