THE CORRY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Pat Goodsel
LETTER FROM
THE BOARD CHAIR
OUR
MISSION
Dear Friends,
On behalf of our Board of Directors, Thank You!
Thank you for your generosity, your partnership,
and your support, all of which helped the Corry
Community Foundation to Inspire, Empower,
and Engage our neighbors, our friends, and our
community.
Because of you, the Corry Community Foundation
exemplifies the power of collective giving. In 2023,
donors made 125 gifts valued at $317,437. Local
nonprofits received 35 awards and 34 scholarships
were awarded to deserving students. Overall, the
Foundation distributed $733,901. Three new funds
and scholarships were created.
As we reflect on 2023, the Corry Community
Foundation is keeping pace with growth. We
welcomed two new board members, Scott Fogle
and Jen Heiser. We formed a structure committee
that focuses on defining and documenting best
practices for our Foundation. We increased our mini-
grant awards, reinvented our annual meeting, and
partnered with The Erie Community Foundation to
introduce a new brand promise and logo in 2024.
The year has been busy with forward-thinking work.
Most importantly, I would like to take this opportunity
to publicly thank Bill Nichols, for his many years of
leadership of The Corry Community Foundation,
stepping down after 14 years as Chairman. His
steady presence and unwavering commitment
have served us well. I am humbled to take the reins
as Board Chair and I hope to make our board,
donors, sta, and the entire community proud as the
Foundation looks ahead to the future.
As we look to the future, reflecting on past successes
reminds us of our roots and our purpose. Enjoy the
stories highlighting the empowerment of our donors’
generosity, the inspiring support of the Class of 2012
for the Rougeau scholarship, and the engaging
events of our Arts Council. Working together, we
Inspire, Empower and Engage our community to
create positive change in Corry.
For Good, for Corry, Forever
Pat Goodsel
Board Chair
The mission of the Corry Community Foundation is to improve

JAY ROUGEAU
Corry is a community unlike any other.
When a tragedy strikes, we come together.
Jacques “Jay” Rougeau died in the line of
duty on June 17, 2023. He was 29 years old.
As a student here in Corry, Jay was popular
and well-liked by everyone who knew him.
His million-dollar smile lit up every room he
entered.
Jay was called to law enforcement from
a young age, and held an internship with
the City of Corry Police Department while
majoring in criminal justice at Penn State.
Jay achieved his lifelong dream of
becoming a Pennsylvania State Trooper
on June 28, 2020. Even as a rookie state
trooper, Jay was a standout among his
peers. He did his job, did it well, and did
not seek fanfare or accolades. His future in
law enforcement was bright.
On June 17th 2023, Jay went to work on
his day o to assist his fellow troopers in
an active shooter case. He lost his life
protecting his brothers and sisters in law
enforcement. Jay left behind his high
school sweetheart and bride of 5 years,
Chloe, his mom Angela, sister Christina,
brother Justin, several nieces and
nephews, grandparents, aunts, uncles and
cousins. The outpouring of support for Jay’s
family and friends has been overwhelming
and inspiring.
When Jay’s life was cut short, his friends
and classmates of the Class of 2012
were determined that his memory would
be honored in perpetuity through the
Trooper Jacques “Jay” Rougeau Memorial
Scholarship.
The fundraising that took place to
secure an endowed scholarship was
incredible. The Corry Girls Volleyball
and Boys Basketball teams both held
fundraiser games. Cathedral Prep and
McDowell High School used their rivalry
for a successful fundraiser during their last
regular season boys basketball game.
INSPIREINSPIRE
These eorts, and the initiative of Jay’s classmates, have ensured that Jay will touch the
future of law enforcement through this scholarship. His memory lives on through their
determination.
Governor Josh Shapiro perhaps said it best when he said ‘Jay drove toward danger to
protect the rest of us. We should celebrate his heroism and never forget it.’
Jay Rougeau will not be forgotten and through the scholarship dedicated in his honor, will
continue to inspire others to public service.

Thank you to the following donors whose contributions helped establish
Jay's scholarship
The Corry Community Foundation has a
twenty-four year history of eective and diligent
leadership. One of those leaders, Mary Alice
Hammond, has been empowering people and
organizations since long before our foundation
began.
After graduating from Hamot School of Nursing
in 1951, Mary Alice was immediately hired as
a surgical nurse at Hamot. In 1952 she married
William (Bill) Hammond, Jr. who she met while
visiting family, and moved to Corry. She continued
in her nursing career with Dr. O’Hare until starting
their family, and later served on the board of the
Visiting Nurses of Erie County.
Believing true empowerment comes when you
convert intention into action, Mary Alice
became active in her Corry community. She
joined the Corry Area Fine Arts and the Fine Arts
Auxiliary bringing Thursdays in the Park and the
Missoula Players to our area. Mary Alice served on
the board of the Corry Cancer Society and was
instrumental in planning the original “Relay for Life”
events. Mary Alice professes her most satisfying
project was the creation of the Women’s Garden
of Serenity at the Corry Memorial Hospital, now
LECOM.
In the early 2000s, Mary Alice joined the board of
the Corry Community Foundation on which she
remains an emeritus member. Believing in the
Foundation’s
vision, the
Hammonds
opened the
William and Mary
Alice Hammond
Fund in 2003.
What started
as a minimal
contribution
has grown
to $101,163
providing
unrestricted funds benefiting a broad range
of local nonprofits. At Bill’s passing in 2017,
Mary Alice began the William and Mary Alice
Hammond Donor Designated Fund for the
Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Corry. This fund
yields annual income for the Episcopal Church
and since 2017 has distributed close to $10,000.
The church will be able to access these funds
in perpetuity. Mary Alice encourages others to
establish an endowment to provide ongoing
support for their nonprofit(s) of choice, or
unrestricted funding to enhance the grants
awarded annually to Corry Area nonprofits by
the Corry Community Foundation.
Mary Alice is the proud mother of Jane (Bill)
Roche and William “Buzz” (Miki) Hammond III
of Corry, Sue (Denny) Scalise of Erie, and John
(Rizzia) Hammond of Houston, TX. She also
celebrates being a grandmother to eleven
grandchildren and great grandmother to eleven
great grandchildren.

CORRY AREA ARTS COUNCIL
The Corry City Park Gazebo is a popular
place all year, but no more so than in
the summertime when every Thursday a
new band graces its stage to entertain
generations of Corryites. The eorts to
bring new acts and keep summers exciting
in Corry are all thanks to the hard work
and determination of the Corry Area Arts
Council.
The Art Council works under the belief
that bringing exhibits, performances and
productions of artistic and cultural value to
our city, Corry’s residents would not only be
enriched, but also drawn closer together
as a community. Since launching the
summer concert series, the Arts Council has
established itself as a significant community
asset, drawing crowds of all ages to their
weekly events.
As Corry’s go-to organization for all
things art, the Council grew to also
accommodate the Artist’s Guild and the
Arts Council Auxiliary, the latter of which,
under the tireless eorts of the late Norma
Lloyd, brought the Missoula Theatre
program to the students of Corry for a
weeklong festivity culminating in a live
stage performance.
Engaging our residents with live music,
providing youth with new artistic mediums
to explore, and bringing the magic of all
aspects of a live performance is what the
Arts Council and their subsidiaries do best.
The Arts Council binds our community
weekly at an event where our residents
from all socioeconomic backgrounds
come together to talk, sing, dance and
connect with each other.
