death of romantic relationships. Students on this panel
have developed advice columns for people who are
going through breakups, divorces, or relational
struggles. Audience participation and questions are

A) Using Relational Dialectics to Examine the
Tensions of a Private Universitys Director of
Theatre
The purpose of this narrative analysis is to explore how
the theatre director at McKendree University
experiences the stresses of directing a college level
production. This study will apply Relational Dialectics
Theory to this directors experiences in order to
understand the tensions of this narrative.

B) How Individuals of Mixed Race Negotiate
Their Identity: A Phenomenological Study
Individuals of mixed race often face the challenge of
how they interact with others about their race. The
purpose of this study is to explore how students of
mixed race on McKendrees campus identify
themselves, as well as how they negotiate their identity
in specific situations.

Warnings in the Classroom
In recent years, college students have increasingly
demanded warnings from teachers before difficult
topics such as suicide, trauma, or sex are covered in
courses. While instructors perspectives on trigger
warnings have been the focus of research in the past,
this session will provide information about the general
opinion of college students regarding the use of trigger
warnings in the classroom setting. The presenter will
also describe the results of an experimental measure
involving a video about sexual assault statistics.

FICTIONAL Press Conference
Public relations students will host a mock press
conference. Their professor has simulated a public
relations crisis where the team will need to address the
media. Many of the members will act as reporters to
simulate the best way to deal with the crisis. In this
SIMULATED crisis, the students will be asked to
respond to allegations that members of a McKendree
sports team have been arrested for housing a meth lab
in the basement of Carnegie Hall.

With the rising costs of higher education and the
importance of earning a degree, many students are
forced to take on full time jobs while in college. The
stresses and struggles these students experience are
explored rarely in contemporary research. The purpose
of this phenomenological study is to understand how
working students communicate their stories about how
they balance work, school, and life.

Phenomenological Study
While divorce is common in the United States, people
tell their divorce stories in a variety of way. Since
researchers have found that children from divorced
families are more likely to be divorced themselves, it is

study is to understand how adults, who experienced
their parents’ divorce as children, tell their stories.

A) How Manly Are You? A Phenomenological
Study About the Experiences of Male Cheerleaders
Often, men who participate in sports such as
cheerleading find it necessary to negotiate their
sexuality and their masculinity. The purpose of this
qualitative study is to understand the experiences of
male cheerleaders, specifically focusing on how they
frame their identity in light of their sexuality and
masculinity.

B) Hook-up Culture: A Phenomenological Study
Many people believe that U.S. college students are
doing away with the traditional script of dating and are
creating and embracing a new script fueled by sexual
desire. In the last decade, sexual freedom has been
rising especially among college students, and this

culture a culture of hooking up. The purpose of this
study is to understand how college students feel and
talk about the hook-up culture.

The Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Cognitive
Function
This presentation will discuss a study that looked to see
if aerobic exercise improved memory retention. The
study was conducted by having one group listen to a
story while seated and the other listen to the same story
while walking on a treadmill at a pace that maintained
their heart rate at 70% maximum. Both groups

contained 15 females and 15 males from the ages of 18-
24 that all attend McKendree University.

#179 All-student Art Show
This show is an exhibition of student work created in
studio classes at McKendree University during the
Spring 2017 semester. Students select their best work
and prepare it for professional display in the
McKendree University Gallery of Art. The exhibit
showcases the work of art majors as well as the work of
students enrolled in fine arts general education studio
courses. The gallery will be open from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
