“I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Making the decision to move from home
was nerve wracking at rst, but through the friendliness of McKinney faculty and their ability
to create a welcoming atmosphere, I truly feel at home here. I have leveraged McKinney’s
extensive resources through participating in their externship program and involvement in
campus organizations. I have interned at the Indiana Statehouse in the Court of Appeals, where
I wrote opinions on a range of civil and criminal issues for a judge. My participation in the Sports
and Entertainment Law Society sparked my interest in intellectual property law, leading to an internship at a
music law rm in Miami, Florida. Choosing McKinney has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

“What I love most about McKinney
is the people: the gentlemen
welcoming me every day at the
front desk; the friendly library
sta; faculty who go above and
beyond in their eorts to teach; the
OPD and OSA sta who work relentlessly to support
students; the generous alumni, and, of course, my
fellow students, with whom I’ve shared countless hours
together over the past year and a half! This community
is lled with good people who care about each other
and want to make a positive dierence in Indianapolis
and beyond. I’m so grateful to be a part of it.
Thomas R. Prible, 3L

As a non-traditional student in
the part-time program, I have
experienced the learning curve of
balancing school, work, and life!
The community at IU McKinney
continues to be sensitive,
supportive, and empathetic to working students. I am
incredibly thankful to be a part of such a resourceful
community that is fully committed and invested in
my success.

“Choosing McKinney was the best
decision I could have possibly
made for my future. Every day
on campus I feel welcomed,
encouraged, challenged, and
supported by my classmates, the incredible
professors, and the wonderful sta. It’s so special to
be a part of a program where I know the people I’m
surrounded by want me to succeed and want to help
me achieve my goals. One of my favorite things about
McKinney is the fact that it’s located in the heart of
Indianapolis. This prime location has allowed me to
meet and network with many professionals in the
community and opened so many doors for me.
Rebecca Foerder, 2L
Noblesville, IN
“I chose IU McKinney because I
was able to continue building
my professional network that I
had started while I was still in
undergrad. I was selected as an
ICLEO Fellow and to attend the
2020 Summer Institute which was such a wonderful
experience. Living in Indiana has aorded me so
many opportunities that I never thought I could have.
I have worked in state government and with several
courts which have both been extremely valuable
experiences. Aer law school, I intend to pursue a
career in the military as a JAG ocer.

School of Law, you will GAIN KNOWLEDGE that you’ll use to transform lives and
make a dierence.
THE J.D. PROGRAM
You are required to complete 90 credit hours for graduation, including a core

a specic legal area.
We oer a three-year, full-time, in-person program, as well as a four-year, part-time,

courses (mix of in-person and asynchronous online), with in-person meetings two
nights weekly.
NEED MORE FLEXIBILITY?
A pioneer in distance learning, IU McKinney Law has experience integrating online

just an experiment—or an emergency.
We oer more than 25 courses entirely online, adding more to the curriculum every

My decision to attend IU
McKinney has positively
impacted my career.
Due to IU McKinneys
close proximity to the
downtown Indianapolis
legal community, I was
able to network with
several attorneys, which
ultimately led to me getting
interviews and jobs at Krieg
DeVault and then Faegre
Drinker Biddle & Reath. The
knowledge and experience
I gained from my judicial
externships were also
benecial as I transitioned
from private practice to
clerking with the United

and now with the United

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Law School Beyond the Lecture
Becoming an excellent lawyer requires real-world legal experience, and at the Indiana
University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, that PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
BEGINS WHILE YOU ARE STILL A STUDENT.
IU McKinney requires that law school students complete at least 6 credits in
experiential learning. Students can meet and even exceed this requirement through a
variety of opportunities, including clinics, externship programs, and simulation courses.
Experiential learning is integrated into every McKinney student’s law school
education. By putting what you learn in the classroom to work, you’ll apply LEGAL
KNOWLEDGE, gain a stronger sense of ETHICAL JUDGMENT, and develop
ESSENTIAL LAWYERING SKILLS.
And, there’s nowhere like Indianapolis to do it.
The law school’s location in the heart of Indianapolis—the center of law, healthcare,
and business in Indiana and the 16th largest city in the U.S.—presents unparalleled
opportunities for students seeking to further their understanding of the law through
practical experience.
AT IU MCKINNEY, YOU CAN:
» Counsel and represent actual clients in live clinics.
» Hone your skills in simulation courses, where practicing attorneys and faculty
work with students to build legal skills in negotiations, trial advocacy, legal writing,
mediation, and more.
» Earn academic credit while working in an externship within the justice system
(with federal and state judges, prosecutor oces, or public defender oces
across the state); business (including Eli Lilly and Company); government (with a
wide variety of Indiana agencies and oces); sports and entertainment (National
Collegiate Athletic Association, Horizon League); and public interest groups
(American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Victim and Human Rights).
“The highlights of my law school experience were spent
participating on the school’s national moot court team
and various externships. I was able to travel to both
Seattle, WA and Boston, MA to represent the school
at the American Bar Association’s yearly moot court
competition. I had the opportunity to learn the real side
of appellate work as an extern clerking for an Indiana
Court of Appeals judge. And before I left law school,
I wrote an appellate brief for a real client and argued
at the Indiana Court of Appeals through the school’s
appellate clinic. In my three years of law school, I had
experiences foreign to even some practicing attorneys.

“I participated in the Child Advocacy Law Clinic during the spring of my 2L year. It was without a doubt the most challenging but
rewarding experience of my academic career. The lessons were thoughtfully prepared, and discussions were thought-provoking and
meaningful. After earning my certication, I was thrown straight into handling cases of my own. The professors were there every
step of the way to answer questions, calm nerves, and most importantly - provide support and guidance! IU McKinney oers several
clinics in numerous areas of law; there is truly something for everyone! Through the clinic, IU McKinney helped me feel prepared
for the ‘real world’ because because it taught me to manage my time eectively, to defuse highly emotional situations, and to

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Interested in doing an externship on your own? The Supervised Externship Placement (SEP) allows students to earn academic
credit for experiential learning done in conjunction with a eld placement with an entity for which there is no relevant existing
externship or existing program with the law school. Students may identify placements on their own or in conjunction with a full-
time faculty member. Students will spend 50 hours at the placement for each credit hour earned.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
MOOT COURT
The Moot Court Program lets you apply your developing skills and knowledge by
focusing on appellate brief writing and oral advocacy in both an intramural competition
and in traveling, intermural competitions.
Your oral arguments are scored by professors, practitioners, and judges from our legal
community. The top 32 scorers join the prestigious Order of Barristers, making them
eligible to participate in traveling competitions. McKinney students regularly travel to
and compete in the ABAs national competition and a variety of subject-matter-based
national competitions, including environmental and health law.
LAW REVIEWS
A law review is a student-run journal that publishes scholarly articles by professors,
judges, and other members of the legal community. Law reviews also publish articles by
students, called notes, which are shorter, heavily researched pieces focused on relevant
legal topics.

PRO BONO
The McKinney Pro Bono Program was created to help students build their legal
and leadership skills in service to the community and to encourage a lifelong
commitment to using their professional training in the public interest.
Our program aords participants the chance to assist with the legal needs of the
underrepresented and those with limited nancial resources. Although students do
not receive academic credit or pay of any kind for their pro bono volunteer work, they
will acquire legal and practical experience in a variety of practice areas while growing
professionally.
Students who volunteer at least 50 hours during their law school tenure will be
recognized for their service.

Creating Opportunities in
Legal Education
The Indiana University Robert H.
McKinney School of Law gave birth
to the resilience that was necessary
for me to forge a path for myself and
others through experiential learning
and rigorous law courses. Programs
like the Indiana Conference for
Legal Education (ICLEO), allowed
me to interface with law school
professors and administrators,
gain invaluable skills to excel in my
rst- and second-year law school
classes, and build meaningful
connections with my peers. As a
result of my ICLEO experience,
I was selected to participate in
the Carr L. Darden CLEO Court of
Appeals Summer Intern Program.
I was placed under the immediate
supervision of a Judge of the Indiana
Court of Appeals. I assisted the judge
with administrative, clerical, and
research tasks, including written
memoranda on issues of law, and
editing and proof-reading judicial
opinions. As a rst-generation law
student interning for the court,
I was able to merge my passion
with my profession. McKinney
and ICLEO have prepared me to
zealously advocate with poise and
intellect, ensuring the success of my
endeavor to become an exceptional
attorney for the state of Indiana.

The Professional Development Institute (PDI) is a cohort-style program focused
on strengthening professional skills, understanding the unwritten rules of being
a lawyer, and building connections with peers, alumni, and legal employers.
The institute has been developed to support the future career success of rst-
generation and underrepresented rst-year law students. This program has been
funded by a gift from alumnus James Barkley, ’77, and his wife, Cindy, since 2018.
