downloading python
If you don’t already have Python on
your computer, you can download it for free.
Here’s how it works for a computer running
Windows® Vista or newer.
1. First, check if your computer already has
Python. Go to the ‘Start’ menu and click on
‘All Programs’. If you see a program with the
word Python or IDLE in it, or anything with
the Python icon ( ) then you have Python
installed. Check that the version number
begins with a 3, as earlier versions of
Python won’t run all the code in this book.
2. If you don’t have it already,
or if you have the wrong version,
Python is available as a free download
from the Python Software Foundation.
For a link, go to Usborne Quicklinks:
www.usborne.com/quicklinks
and type in ‘Python’. Then click on
‘Download Python from the official
Python.org website’.
3. Python comes in different versions,
shown by different numbers after the name.
This book uses version 3, so any version
number beginning with a 3 will work.
We recommend you download the
latest version.
4. The program will begin to download
automatically. When it has finished, follow
the instructions on screen to complete the
installation. If you want to choose
where
to install it on your machine, choose the
‘Customize installation’ option, which
will allow you to browse places on your
computer. For example, you could save it in
‘My Documents’.
If you have a Mac® or Linux®
computer, or an older
version of Windows®, see
Usborne Quicklinks
for more information about
installing Python on your machine.
